In LED lighting systems, the driving power supply is often the short board that determines the lifespan of the entire lamp. Statistics show that over 60% of LED lighting failure cases are caused by driver power failure, rather than the LED chip itself. Therefore, the selection quality of the driving power supply directly determines the reliability of the product and customer satisfaction.
Constant current drive and constant voltage drive are two basic operating modes. Constant current drive (CC) provides stable output current for LEDs and is the most common LED driving method, suitable for most LED fixtures such as tube lights, mining lights, floodlights, etc. Constant voltage drive (CV) outputs a fixed voltage (usually 12V or 24V), and LED strips achieve constant current through built-in current limiting resistors, suitable for strip and module products. When selecting, it is necessary to strictly distinguish, as mixing will result in LED overcurrent burning or insufficient brightness.

The key performance parameters of the driving power supply include power factor (PF), total harmonic distortion (THD), and surge protection capability. The PF value reflects the utilization efficiency of the power source on the grid's electrical energy. The EU ErP directive requires LED drivers with a power of>25W to have a PF>0.9, and high-end projects recommend a PF>0.95. THD measures the harmonic pollution of power sources on the power grid. The IEEE 519 standard requires THD<20%, and high-quality products can reach<10%. The surge protection capability determines the survival ability of lighting fixtures in lightning strikes and power grid fluctuations. For outdoor lighting, it is recommended to choose products with 4kV differential/6kV common mode surge protection.
Safety certification is the admission certificate for driving power supplies to enter different markets. UL certification has entered North America (Class 2 drivers must meet UL1310 standards), CE certification has entered Europe (must comply with EN61347-1 and EN61347-2-13 standards), TUV certification is highly recognized in the German speaking region, and SAA certification has entered Australia. When foreign trade enterprises choose power supply suppliers, they should require complete certification certificates and test reports, and verify the validity period and coverage range of the certificates. Suggest establishing a list of qualified suppliers for drive power supplies, conducting regular incoming material inspections and reliability testing.
